Segundo o jornal diário inglês The Guardian o panorama em algumas localidades inglesas, tal como em Portugal, é de fome entre os alunos, quando noticia que teachers report growing demand for free breakfasts and rising numbers of underweight, lethargic pupils with signs of hunger e dá exemplos como os do diretor de uma escola de Bradford: Probably about 10%-15% of our pupils come to school hungry and the
number has gone up slightly over the pst two years. The quality of food
in lunchboxes has declined dramatically. These are children whose
parents can't afford school lunches and are not entitled to free school
meals. I have seen lunchboxes with two slices of cheap white bread or a
cheap chocolate-filled brioche and nothing else. Today I saw a Key Stage
1 child with a slice of bread and butter and four economy range
biscuits in his lunchbox. He was so hungry by lunchtime that he stuffed
the whole slice of bread in his mouth and was almost choking on it.
